THE MAN
Joshua Robinson
One day while eating at Shiloh’s Roadhouse, Beth Fultz, a member and singer at the East Bernstadt Church of God, she said, “Alright Brother Owens, where is your glasses? Does every one know you to? It is just like Brother Owens, we can not take him no where with out every one recognizing him.”
Pastor Billy Owens 46, Pastors a church in East Bernstadt, Ky. The church is East Bernstadt Church of God. The church has grown leaps and bounds. The church was chartered in 1936, by Happy Tom Brookes.
Pastor Owens is known as “Brother Owens” is an old school pastor wearing suits to preach in but he gets on your level. He lives in house by the church the house is called a parsonage. It is a simple house with a study office area. It is nothing fancy.
People have came back ‘home’ Loretta and Mike Robinson and family left the East Bernstadt Church of God about 12 years ago, because the church was ran by the family. Mike 56, and Loretta 56, have came back because of youngest son Eric 13, likes it there. Loretta Robinson stated that “Brother Owens preaches the Word.”
The Robinson family had left East Pittsburg Pentecostal Church in July of 2006, it was more of a show a social club of sorts. In 2004 Pastor Jerry Lewis of East Pittsburg Pentecostal Church was trying to keep London dry. The church was not united several people doing several different things. There was a few people out and about but no unity.
Pastor Owens, was born in Tennessee, but raised on a large farm in Virginia. He was not raised in church of any kind.
He drank for about ten years and was raised in a family that drank. He started drinking at a very young age. What stopped him was a near fatale car accident before he got saved. He decided then he was done drinking.
He was saved meaning he accepted Jesus Christ into his Life at the age of 22. Owens, was called into the ministry at age 25, and has ministered all over the state of Kentucky.
Brother Owens still is against London being wet, he knows its effects. The way the measure was worded it was city limits only. “It’s a toughy right there the way they had hat it was city limits so I am not sure it would have made a difference if Christians would have been united or not,” stated Owens.
With London being wet now other bad things can happen to our young people spirits can take over.
Pastor Owens’s son Brian Owens 23, took some DUI classes and at one class they said “It takes 100 generations for alcohol to get out of your jeans.”
“Brian met a young girl who was nearly an alcoholic when he met her and he fell into it,” Owens stated.
“I drank a 5th and 36pack a day,” Brian said to Mike Robinson. Mike had told Brian he had been praying for him.
One day when Mike went to see Brother Owens, Pastor Owens, said, “Come on in here Mike. How do you like your coffee?” This threw Mike back because he had never had a pastor be so down to earth with him.
Owens jokes around a lot and gives opportunities for ministers to minister in church. “Joshua
get in here before I come outside and roll you in the parking lot,” Owens stated jokingly.
With a thundering voice Owens approaches the pulpit and means business. Owens is a serious man and pastors a church of nearly 250 people attend every service.
One of the ministers at the East Bernstadt Church of God states, “Brother Owens, is the man,” Buck Fultz exclaimed.
