TROPICAL STORM BETA TO AFFECT NICARAGUAAt 11 p.m. Thursday, Tropical Storm Beta, the 23rd tropical storm of the 2005 Atlantic season, was located near 12.1 north ... 81.4 west, or about 160 miles east of Bluefields, Nicaragua and 55 miles south-southeast of San Andres Island. Beta is drifting to the north and this is expected to continue into Friday. The tropical storm will start to move more west northwest later Friday or Friday night. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph. Estimated central pressure is 994 millibars or 29.4 inches. A hurricane warning remains in effect for the Islands of San Andres and Providencia. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch remain in effect for the entire Caribbean coast of Nicaragua from the border with Coast Rica northward to Cabo Gracias near the Nicaragua/Honduras border and adjacent islands. An upper-level ridge of high pressure is sitting right on top of the storm, which puts it in an area favorable for continuing intensification. Beta should become a hurricane during Friday. An upper-level trough of low pressure will slowly pass across the Gulf of Mexico over the next day or two and may draw this feature slowly to the north-northwest, then a track more to the west is likely over the weekend as the trough moves into the Atlantic and high pressure builds in the mid-levels across the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rain will affect eastern parts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, as well as western Panama, over the next couple of days and could lead to major flooding if the feature moves to the coast or inland. Strong damaging winds may develop along the coasts of Costa Rica and Nicaragua late Saturday into Sunday. Tropical waves along 40 west, 62 west and along 74 west. All three are moving to the west at 10-15kts and show no signs of development at this point. We don't expect any development out of these waves through at least Saturday. The wave along 62 west is the more robust wave and has at times looked favorable for development. But, during Thursday some shear has started to affect the system and there are no signs of a lower level feature. This wave will be watched carefully for possible development later this weekend. Computer models that were suggesting some chance at development have backed off at this point.
The hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean officially begins June 1.-->
